I have a few that peak at more than half a gallon a day two months after they freshen (give birth). It gradually starts to go down after that. A first freshener might be down to nothing by six months, but a typical lactation is 10 months. I have one goat that is still giving a quart a day at 13 months! These are Nigerian dwarf goats, so they give a lot less than a big Saanen would -- however, their butterfat is 50% to 125% higher than a big goat, which is perfect for cheesemaking!Deborah Niemannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10754242197245805551noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21054991.post-67511359303376123762010-08-13T19:52:09.874-05:002010-08-13T19:52:09.874-05:00I would love to try my hand at milking goats, but ...I would love to try my hand at milking goats, but I'm sure the task of milking 4-6 of them would be daunting! It looks like your set up is working for you... and you could work a few more 'girls' into your routine without making a big difference in your time. How much milk do you get per girl?Emily Colehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04451102661519375820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21054991.post-18588242688576665432010-08-13T17:42:05.716-05:002010-08-13T17:42:05.716-05:00I hate bureaucrats. >:K

Got any suggestions?

LindaG, I'd love to sell a small amount of cheese. However, it would cost me close to $100,000 to meet state requirements as a Grade A dairy and to build a certified kitchen, so it's not going to happen. When I told the woman at the Illinois Dept of Ag that they should have an exemption for small producers, she told me that all consumers in Illinois should have access to safe food, regardless of who makes it or how much they make.Deborah Niemannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10754242197245805551noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21054991.post-75295871874669849012010-08-13T14:20:59.387-05:002010-08-13T14:20:59.387-05:00That's great. :)

I'm just sure to have the lines not sagging as they go into the lid. I got my new line and cut it to the length I wanted from partsdeptonline.com. I got clear air lines and silicone milk lines. They also have a great explanation of the various milking systems here: http://www.partsdeptonline.com/maximizing_the_milk_harvest.htm

If you aren't sure what size to get call them, they are awesome about helping out on the phone.
