Holidays, blogging, eating, and soap

If you live in the U.S., today isn't just Halloween, it's the beginning of the crazy holiday season. For the next two months, we'll be thinking about food and parties and food and gifts and food. Did I mention that we tend to eat a lot of food in the last two months of the year? As you know, I love food. I'm starting to think about what I want to bake for the holiday season this year. So, you'll be seeing a lot of food posts in the next couple months.

But before we bid adieu to October, I thought it would be fun to have a little give-away. If you'd like to have three bars of my goat milk soap, just leave a comment letting me know which October post was your favorite -- or what you missed and want to hear more about. And I'll try to keep that in mind and not talk too much about food in the next couple months. I'll choose the winner randomly, and you can choose either the animal soaps or the Christmas soaps. Let me know if you need unscented. Otherwise, it will be a mix of fragrances. And be sure to leave your comment by midnight U.S. central time Monday. I'll announce the winner Tuesday on the blog, so be sure to check back and see if you won.

I make square bars of soap for most of the year, but at holiday time, I make some pretty soap in molds, mostly for gifts. If you were thinking of buying some of my soap for gifts this year, and it's more than a few bars, be sure to place your order by mid-November. If I have to make more soap to fill your order, it has to dry for a month before it's good to use. You can place your order through my website, and don't hesitate to email if you have questions. There's an email link on the Ordering page.

Oh woo hoo maybe I am the first one here... I liked the pigs and acorn post if I have to single one out, but like Stop the Insanity too and then there was, oh well, I like all of your posts. Thanks for working so hard to post for us with great thoughts and information. Always like to hear about new recipes or how you take care of the animals! Have a great day and blessings...

I learned a lot from your turkey post. The more I learn about conventional farming, the more I am thankful for my farmers' market, and especially Farmer Dale who supplies me with beef, chicken, and eggs! I think we will unfortunately have a "large breasted" turkey on the Thanksgiving table at my parents' house, but they just started buying raw milk, so maybe next year will be different. I also enjoyed your comment about producing your own food: it's not necessarily "cost effective," but the quality is worth it. Thanks for your inspiration.

Hmm. Hard to decide on a favorite post, but I think that I too have to pick the turkey post. Mostly because it inspired me to look for a heritage turkey for the holidays, and I sadly was unable to find one less than three hundred miles away. I plan to round up a group of local folks from our wee farmers market and see if we can cooperatively raise a few between us. Many thanks.

Deborah,

Being partial to goats (and loving trees!), I would ahve to say I loved your post on "Goats in the Fall". You have really lovley property and it makes me envoius of your trees! What I really loved was the pictures, because the trees make your goats look so pretty! I really like your goat posts in general, because I learn so much from them!

However, I also enjoyed "Our Knight in Fur". I loved reading about Sovalye! And the story behind the name!

I like all of your posts on animals, but especially these two!

Have good day!

I think my favourite was "Goat fun", just because it was so whimsical. I enjoyed the rant about the food bank supplies, because that's something I've been thinking about myself. And the posts about the turkeys, and the places you eat when you eat out were the most educational for me. But really, I'll read anything you blog about! :)

I liked goat fun because it was nice to see pictures of the babies growing up. That being said a lot of your food posts are inspiring me to cook and eat more organic and local produce which is very good. Your animals soaps are really very good, the sheep is adorable.

Without a doubt my favorite post from October was "The Lamb Who Lived". Simply because that was ALMOST me with one of our three rabbits that were butchered this fall. I actually had to stop doing the rabbit chores and have someone else do it because I knew she would make great breeding stock, but we needed meat in the freezer and already have good breeding stock. I know how hard it is to let an animal go and how easy it is to know you have to hold on to one sometimes.

I do love all your posts but especially the informative ones. Oh and the goats. And the turkeys.

I really enjoyed the blog on Your Food and Your Lifestyle....it is particularly relevant to us right now when dealing with our new vegan lifestyle! I have to say, though, that I was also interested in your blog about the safety that should be used at all times when making soap. I will, in the future, wear eye protection!!!
Thank you!!

The Lamb who Lived or Bread for Busy People (which I still have flagged in my "to-do" list). I like the posts about how you do things, in general :) And I want soap! :)

I love all the animal posts the best. I have so much to learn, and you they help. I also love posts that come with pictures.
Your little soap shapes are so cute!

My favorite post was your story about the soap accident. It was NOT a pleasant thing, but I so admired you for being honest and vulnerable about a mistake. We all make mistakes, but you didn't have to tell us about yours. It was sobering to read about how in an instant your eyesight was at risk, and what was done to help you.
My second favorite was the posts about the pigs and acorns. So interesting to think about the flavor of the meat being improved by the acorn diet. Who knew???
Thanks for posting so faithfully. I know your life is crazy, so I really admire your regular updates.

You've had some really good posts this month. I learned a lot about the turkeys that I never knew. I enjoy your animal updates so I would have to pick "Goat Fun" as my favorite. Those babies are adorable (and I'm guessing a real handfull!) Thanks.

I really enjoyed the Turkey post. We already raise many animals here on our farm, goats, pigs, chickens... but I've always been reluctant to include turkeys. I'm sold though. We've already come up with a nice coop design that will work for us and I"m excited to raise some heritage breed turkeys next year.

I also enjoy your goat posts and would love to hear about ways that you keep your animals healthy, particularly herbal/natural remedies or preparations that you used.
Thanks!

At first I thought those pretty shapes were candy! I had no idea you created such PRETTY soaps! I'm using my first bar of your soap after finally finishing what was in the shower, and love it. Since I won that contest, it would probably be too selfish to hope to win again, but I LOVE those animals shapes.... I love all your posts, but liked "Our knight in fur" because it's nice to see Sovalye, the handsome dude.

Like a few others, my favorite post was "The Lamb Who Lived" because, at least in part, I am a softie and don't like facing slaughter. But, even more so, I liked it because it was about his fleece, and as a spinner, I know what it feels like to see a fleece with beautiful colour and quality, and to say "I must have that fleece"! I'd love to see his fleece when he's shorn. Perhaps you will feel like selling some of it!! I love love love the sheep soap!

I enjoyed the post about bread and would be very interested in learning more about making bread. I also learned a lot from your lye splashing incident. Thanks for all the work on your blog. I've really learned a lot.

I enjoyed your post about your doggie "Our Knight in Fur", mostly because my son is still talking about meeting your dog - he was really impressed with him!
I'm still using just my second bar of soap, of the soaps I bought from you - they last forever! I'm glad you mentioned needed to order earlier for Christmas gifts, I tend to be a last minute shopper, although I mean to do better every year.

I really do enjoy reading all of the different stories of the animals of your farm...even if my heart breaks on your behalf when I read the stories of your loss. I do enjoy reading the food posts also. Those posts give me a different perspective of food and a lot to thing about.
